Here is some important information about the healthcare system in Madeira, including details on healthcare providers, insurance options and emergency services.

  1. National Health Service (SNS): In Madeira, the public health system is an integral part of Portugal's National Health Service (SNS). The SNS provides free or low-cost health care for legal residents, including doctor visits, hospital treatments and subsidized drugs. The main public hospital in Madeira is Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça (offers 24h emergency services), located in Funchal.

  2. Private Health Services: There are also several private clinics and hospitals in Madeira, which offer a wide range of medical services and specialties. Private health services generally have shorter waiting times and greater availability of appointments, but costs can be significantly higher than in the SNS. Hospital Particular da Madeira offers 24h emergency services.

  3. Health Insurance: If you are a resident of Madeira, it is recommended to have health insurance, either through the public system (SNS) or a private health plan. For citizens of the European Union (EU), it is advisable to obtain the European Health Insurance Card (CESD), which allows access to necessary medical care during the temporary stay in Madeira, under the same conditions as local residents. For non-EU citizens, it is important to check the health insurance requirements for your visa or residence permit and consider taking out private health insurance.

  4. Emergency Services: In Madeira, the emergency number to access services such as fire, police and ambulance is 112. This number can be dialed free of charge from any landline or mobile phone. In the event of a medical emergency, the patient will be referred to the nearest emergency service, which can be at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça or at local health centers.

  5. Pharmacies: Pharmacies in Madeira are well distributed throughout the island and offer a variety of prescription and over-the-counter medicines. Pharmacies can also provide advice on minor health issues and first aid. Some pharmacies have extended opening hours and overnight emergency service.
